
Join 12-week exercise study on short movement breaks
This UBC study on obesity seeks people with a high body weight who live near Kelowna or Hamilton.
If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will get monetary compensation for your time and effort. 80 people in total will enroll.

What is an ‘exercise snack’?
- An ‘exercise snack’ is a short 1-minute movement break that is quick and fun to do.
Research centers:
- This research study is led by The University of British Columbia and McMaster University.
What does the study involve?
- Participants will do 1 minute of exercise, 4 times per day, 5 days per week for 12 weeks.
Why Join?
- It can be difficult to get the recommended amount of weekly physical activity. These everyday exercise ‘snacks’ are designed to fit into your daily life.
- Participants will receive a tailored program, allowing flexibility in choosing the timing and type of movement breaks.
- You will be compensated for your time and effort.
- Help advance exercise research.


Who can Join?
- Have a BMI between 27.5 and 45.
- Aged between 35 and 64
- Participants cannot be diagnosed with Diabetes

Research ethics approval
The Universities’ research ethics boards have reviewed and approved the study research protocol including recruitment procedures.
Additional study information
After enrolling in this study, you will go through the following five stages:
Stage 1: Getting started. You will visit one of the research sites. Health and fitness data will be gathered, to be compared with the same data after you have participated for 12 weeks in this study.
Stage 2: Online meeting to teach you how to use and access the ‘exercise snacks’ video instruction platform.
Stage 3 : Your 12 weeks of ‘exercise snacks’ start. You will be asked to do 1 minute of exercise, 4 times per day, 5 days per week. The researchers will call you for short check-ins
Stage 4 : Ending the study. You will visit the research site to repeat the measurements taken in stage 1.
