Do ketones affect hunger levels for people with obesity?

This research study at UBC invites people with higher body weights to test if a natural supplement can regulate hunger levels.

By taking a ketone supplement, people with obesity might experience similar hunger and appetite as someone without obesity.

Each session includes a buffet lunch, and a takeaway meal with snacks. The study involves two visits to the UBC Okanagan campus.

What does the study involve?

  • Visit UBC twice for 12 meals of food.
  • The ketone supplement is included in the breakfast.

Participants must be:

  • Aged between 19 and 45
  • High body weight (30-40 BMI)

What is required of participants?

  • Tests include blood draws, questionnaires about appetite and breath analysis.
  • Each visit starts between 7-9:30 AM and ends about 4.5 hours later.

Why Join?

  • Each visit includes 6 meals of food : 3 meals to eat the day before, 2 meals during the visit, and 1 meal to bring home afterwards. In total, 12 meals are provided.
  • A DEXA scan will provide data on body fat percentage, muscle mass and bone mineral density. A DEXA scan measures your body composition in terms of bone density, lean mass and fat tissue. It’s simple, quick and non-invasive.
  • Participation is paid.
  • Contribute to research on ketones, obesity, appetite and hormones.

Who can Join?

  • Ages 19 – 45
  • Individuals with Obesity. Obesity in this study is defined as having a BMI between 30 and 40.
  • Sedentary or only recreationally active.
  • Able to visit the UBCO campus.

Additional study information

Taking ketones as a supplement is an area of research with potential benefits for appetite regulation and health.

Hormones can make it challenging for individuals with obesity to regulate their appetite and food intake. This study tests if a Ketone supplement can help regulate hunger.

The study will compare appetite levels, hormones, energy metabolism, and food intake for all participants between two visits to UBCO – once with and once without the ketone supplement. The two visits need to be 7 to 28 days apart.

During visits, participants will be given a standard breakfast meal consisting of a protein bar, juice, and mixed nuts. The lunch buffet consists of pre-packaged spaghetti with sauce (e.g., Stouffers or similar), dinner rolls, butter, fresh fruit, salad or steamed vegetables, cookies, chips, juice, granola bars, and regular and diet soda. Participants will be asked to consume as much or as little as they like, until comfortably full, and can request more of any item.

On each study day visit, participants will undergo a resting metabolic rate test (indirect calorimetry) followed by a fasting appetite rating and blood sample collection.

Participants will be allowed to read, work, use their phone or watch television on their personal laptop in between time points in which indirect calorimetry tests are not occurring (i.e., between 0-30, 60-90, and 120-150 timepoints). Participants will be asked to do similar activities for their second visit.

To join this study, participants first need to pass an online questionnaire:
