Join Yale Fibroid Fertility Study
Researchers at Yale University want to help women who struggle to get pregnant.
This study seeks women with fibroids who want a baby but have been unable to for some time. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors made of muscle and fibrous tissue that grow in or around the uterus. These can make getting pregnant more difficult.
This study tests a green tea extract to potentially improve fertility alongside an IUI fertility treatment.
What does the study involve?
Participants will:
- visit one of four available clinics 8 times during 6 months:
- Yale University, New Haven, CT 06520
- Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD 21218
- The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL 60637
- University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, IL 60607
Uterine Fibroids?
- Fibroids are often undiagnosed in women with problems getting pregnant.
- If you are unsure whether you have fibroids or not, the University of Chicago can diagnose you in order for you to join this study.
Tea for Fibroids & Fertility
The green tea extract contains EGCG, a compound being studied for its potential effects on fibroids and pregnancy outcomes in women.
EGCG might shrink fibroids, making pregnancy more likely.
Why Join?
- The ideal outcome of participating in this study is that you will get pregnant, give birth to a healthy baby, and that any fibroids will recede or shrink.
- This research may improve the future treatment of women diagnosed with uterine fibroids seeking fertility treatment.
- This study can help check for undiagnosed fibroids.
Who can Join?
- Participants need to be between 18-40 years old and able to visit the clinic several times for about 6 months.
- Diagnosed with uterine fibroids
- Willing to undergo IUI to get pregnant.

Additional study information
In this study, EGCG is being tested to examine its potential impact on shrinking uterine fibroids and improving the uterine lining for better embryo implantation in women seeking fertility treatment.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is used in many supplements, and naturally occurs in tea.
Black women are at a 2-3 times greater risk of fibroids than Hispanic, Asian and Caucasian women.
- Participants will visit the clinic 8 times during 6 months. (if you need to complete 4 IUI cycles to conceive. The number of visits may be less if you conceive sooner. Most of the visits are standard of care requirements for patients receiving IUI.)
