Join Stroke Exercise study

Dalhousie University invites stroke survivors to a rehabilitation study for 12 weeks.

Participants attend three sessions per week and complete walking, stepping, and balance activities that are adapted to their needs.

This study has two groups: VR (Virtual Reality) and 360-degree treadmill training or traditional exercise. Both groups receive a structured rehabilitation program, just with different training methods.

Payment for contributing to the research will be awarded to all participants who complete the assessments

What is required of participants?

  • Participants attend three sessions per week and complete walking, stepping, and balance activities that are adapted to their needs.

‘VR’ stands for Virtual Reality.

  • The VR system displays a virtual environment that responds to each step, turn, or shift in movement.

Participants get:

  • Access to a new VR-based rehabilitation program
  • Get an honorarium.
  • Support from trained staff

Why Join?

  • A trained team member stays close at all times to guide the participant and monitor safety.
  • Possible improvements in thinking skills, walking ability and balance.
  • Payment for contributing to the research will be awarded to all participants who complete the assessments

Who can Join?

  • Had a stroke 6+ months ago or more.
  • Able to exercise for at least 15 minutes
  • No conditions that affect safe walking or balance
  • NOT currently doing another formal leg exercise program more than once per week
