Join 12-week study on time-efficient exercise

This study on diabetes seeks ages 30-75 who live near Kelowna or Hamilton.

If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will get a Fitbit and monetary compensation for your time and effort. A Fitbit is a device worn on your wrist that measures your activity level.

What is an ‘exercise snack’ and how might it help diabetes?

An ‘exercise snack’ is a short 1-minute movement break that is quick and convenient to do.

Participants will do several of these 1 minute exercises daily for 12 weeks, and then evaluate how their health has been affected.

Research centers

This research study is led by The University of British Columbia and McMaster University.

What does the study involve?

Participants will wear a Fitbit, attend 2 in-person meetings, and do four 1- minute exercise snacks, five days per week.

Why Join?

It can be difficult to get the recommended amount of weekly physical activity. This study is designed to test if short movement breaks can help blood sugar control, cardiorespiratory fitness, and mobility.

  • Participants will receive a Fitbit device for personal use during and after the study. A Fitbit is a device worn on your wrist that measures your activity level.
  • Participants will receive a tailored program, allowing flexibility in choosing the timing and type of movement breaks.
  • Personal health insights may be gained through the monitoring of glucose responses, fitness levels, and activity patterns.
  • Help advance exercise research for type 2 diabetes.

Who can Join?

This study on diabetes seeks ages 30-75 who live near Kelowna or Hamilton.

  • People with type 2 diabetes aged 30-75 are invited. Participants can not be taking insulin.
  • Participants can not be exercising aerobically for more than 150 minutes per week currently, at a moderate intensity or more.
  • Must be able to travel to one of the research sites.

Additional study information

After enrolling in this study, you will go through the following five stages:

  • Stage 1: Getting started. You will visit one of the research sites. Baseline health and fitness data will be gathered. You will get your Fitbit during this visit.
  • Stage 2: Wear a continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM) for 2 weeks to establish your baseline glucose response levels. You will also be provided with a specific diet to eat for two 48-hour periods – one with exercise snacks, and one without.
  • Stage 3: Your 12 weeks of ‘exercise snacks’ start. You will be asked to do 1 minute of exercise, 4 times per day, 5 days per week. For an additional 48 hour period, you will also be provided with a specific diet to consume. The researchers will call you for short check-ins throughout the intervention and you will wear the CGM again for 14 days near the end of the intervention.
  • Stage 4: Ending the study. You will visit the research site to repeat the measurements taken in stage 1. You can keep your Fitbit.
